Wines are made in the vineyard. This age old adage has been used for years to describe vineyards throughout the world. In Sonoma County, few vineyards can compare to the pedigree and 100+ year history of Ash Creek Vineyards. It has been said that wine is a snapshot of the ecology (the slope, soil, exposure, wind, sun, grape variety, weather that particular year) of the vineyard. The unique characteristics of the terroir at Ash Creek Vineyard’s 6 plots have provided winemakers amazing grapes from which are crafted world class wines. Ash Creek Vineyards sits atop northern Alexander Valley’s Pine Mountain, at elevations from 2100 to 2300 feet. Yields from the estate vineyards are targeted at 3.5 to 4.5 tons per acre. The viticultural practices reflect the vintage, through bud and shoot removal, cluster thinning and leaf removal in heavy crop years, or extra water and nutrients in low-yield years. We keep the grapes on the vines for as long as possible to capture the fullest range of fruit flavors. We sample the fruit numerous times before harvest, not only relying on numerical analysis, but also on our own sensory evaluation. With our Estate vineyards, we can also harvest the grapes at natural maturity, even going through some vineyard sites several times, picking only the ripe fruit with each pass.
