Planted 1973
This 3+ acre parcel was planted in 1973 of certified, phase 2, St.
George rootstock, scion wood from Robert Young. Approximately 2,000
vines at 8 x 12 spacing retrofitted in 1990 to an Open-U trellising
system. This hillside elevation is 2,300 feet. Since the retrofit, the
fruit quality has improved showing traditional characteristics of mountain
grown Cabernet. Rich quality fruit with intense color and flavor. This
block is leaf thinned shortly after berry set for optimum sun/element
exposure. This hillside, high elevation (2,200 ft) vineyard is exposed
to element extremes and produces small, intense berries with big, fruity
flavors. The Robert Young scion wood in these older Cab vineyards is
all but extinct; this Redrock block is testimony to the giant leaps
Sonoma County took with Robert Young Cabernet. Gentle rolling to steep
hillsides with as much as 3-5 feet of reddish-brown gravelly loam soils.
